110 years ago, the ruler of Abkhazia, George, swore allegiance to Alexander I
On September 4 (according to the new style), 1810, the ruler of Abkhazia, Georgy Shervashidze, swore allegiance to Emperor of Russia Alexander I. The small principality on the Black Sea finally came under the protection of St. Petersburg. The power of Prince George, however, was held for a long time thanks to the Russian troops in the region. Not everyone in Abkhazia wanted to join Russia, and some sympathized with the Ottoman Empire.
